Vintage History: Metzke Pewter

Pewter is a great addition to any altar—it's warm and silvery and durable. In spell work, it represents luck, influence, and generosity. We like several vintage pewter manufacturers, but especially Metzke, with their nature-inspired designs.

Metzke was founded in 1963 by Dr. Fred and Mary Metzke—Fred as model-maker, Mary as creative designer. After creating more than 3,000 designs, their work available at Disneyworld, the Smithsonian, and Neiman Marcus, Metzke closed its doors in 1997, no longer able to compete with imported pewter giftware.

After Fred's death, Mary ran an antique shop in Tallahassee, FL, called Something Nice. All the Metzke molds and models were donated to W. T. Wilson in Providence, RI. As of the writing of this blog, websites for both Something Nice and W.T. Wilson are no longer active.
